Ochre Mountain

Yellow Cloud Mountains

8″x10″ oil on board. It’s based on a Chinese landscape painting I saw in a book.

I painted this entirely with one brush that I never wash. The bristles are completely stiff as one solid block so when I apply paint I can scrub it onto the surface and push it around.

Brushwork Detail

Here’s a 100% view of the brushstrokes in the bottom left. After putting the paint on I scratched it back off with the hard corners of the bristles to give the rocks form.

I think this came out pretty well and I like painting this kind of subject with these techniques and colors, so I may try to make a short series of paintings like this.
