This painting of a scene that I saw last winter is now varnished. It was somewhere between Granby and Fraser, in the mountains of Colorado west of Denver. The last details on this painting of a sunset from last winter are almost finished. Next, the paint will be curing for a couple of weeks before I varnish it and post the final, so look forward to that soon. Until then, how about I switch back to watercolor for a while? This is a part of Glenwood Canyon that I've taken photos of many times. Originally this painting had much less snow, but the lighting and sky weren't as interesting. I kept the framing and angle of the first reference and painted over it with the snow, lighting, and clouds of a second reference. The clouds and the snowy river were my favorite parts to paint. . There's also a major highway, I-70, that passes straight through the photo on a bridge over the river and disappears into a tunnel on the side of the left mountain. That and a train passing under the bridge were left out of the painting. I think this is somewhere in the western half of Colorado, along the Colorado River, probably not far from Glenwood Springs. The reference photo was taken a few months ago. . The palette this time was ultramarine light, gold ochre, burnt sienna, and titanium white. I've found that, at least for the landscapes that I paint, most of what I paint can be made with this palette or something very similar.
