This is a part of Glenwood Canyon that I've taken photos of many times. Originally this painting had much less snow, but the lighting and sky weren't as interesting. I kept the framing and angle of the first reference and painted over it with the snow, lighting, and clouds of a second reference. The clouds and the snowy river were my favorite parts to paint. . There's also a major highway, I-70, that passes straight through the photo on a bridge over the river and disappears into a tunnel on the side of the left mountain. That and a train passing under the bridge were left out of the painting. I think this is somewhere in the western half of Colorado, along the Colorado River, probably not far from Glenwood Springs. The reference photo was taken a few months ago. . The palette this time was ultramarine light, gold ochre, burnt sienna, and titanium white. I've found that, at least for the landscapes that I paint, most of what I paint can be made with this palette or something very similar. Here's another scene from the same day as the last post. This mule deer was making her way through a narrow path in the snow made by two others a few steps ahead. . There's three different widths of pencil and lead hardnesses, plus a little brown ink from a brush pen. The deer was already drawn and shaded the deer before the ink was added, so I used another page to test adding ink on top of graphite. It worked well, but once the ink was on the deer it was too dark. I tried fixing it with white chalk, white colored pencil, lots of erasing, and shading it again with graphite. The paper held up fairly well through all of that. The painting on the left is of a small stream west of Glenwood Springs, and on the right is a mule deer from another part of the mountains.
