Here's a new painted page in my sketchbook. It's some ivy that I recently got, but it was drawn and painted from a photo. The top page has a different angle of the same plant. When I was actually making this painting days ago I wasn’t sure where I had taken the reference photo, but yesterday I passed by the place again and recognized it. This little scene is a short distance east of the Moffat Tunnel in the Front Range mountains of Colorado. One more oil painting at 8"x6". This valley is called Azure. It’s not labeled or mentioned anywhere that I looked online, but I remembered hearing that people sometimes go hunting there and I finally found a paper hunting map that used that name. The gap between the mountains in the center leads to the Upper Gore Canyon, and there's often people on various boats in this part of the river for either fishing or other recreation. Another small oil painting on sealed paper, mounted on a board. This one is also 8"x6" (about 20x15 cm) like the last painting. I ended up leaving out the train that was in the reference photo and instead made it look like the tracks aren't there. Part of the reason for that is that I've already made several paintings with the train that I ride coming in to the scene in the same way, since that's the view I often see while looking out the window, and I wanted to avoid being repetitive. Also, it seemed at first that the water might be too attention grabbing and it'd need something to balance out the composition, but as I worked it seemed like the textures in the trees and rocks were already offering enough balance. The palette is just ultramarine, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, and titanium white, which is one of my favorite combinations.
